Bathroom Mirror Reflections

Writer's picture: Landis GibsonLandis Gibson

I little insight about me…you can tell what I’m going through by what’s written on my bathroom mirror. I’m a words girl and I have to keep the truth in front of me in order to stay sane. I most highly recommend God’s word. Nothing replaces scripture. Yet, God has gifted a lot of men and women with God-centered phrases that inspire me as I walk through different seasons of life.

I currently have these words (inspired by Laura Casey’s book, Cultivate What Matters) written on my bathroom mirror:

In the WAIT we say:

“Your will be done”

When we feel lost or alone we say:

“God, you are in this place”

When the world presses in on us, we say:

“Lord, You are mighty”

I remember the first time I grabbed the expo marker. I was struggling. It was a dark season of life. I was in the thick of the unknown and brokenness. I felt lost. Knowing the truth, but needing a constant reminder. So I marked down the phrase from Lysa TerKeurst:

God is Good.

God is Good to me.

God is good at being God.

These words carried me for months. When I felt alone or like “good things” were not even close to happening I would remind myself of this truth. I whispered it when I was laying in my bed, I said it out loud in the emotions of hard circumstances, and I can’t tell you how many times I played it in my head trying to hold back the tears.

"The Lord is good,

a stronghold in the day of trouble;

he knows those who take refuge in him."

Nahum 1:7

Truth has a funny way of helping you fight the lies. It brings your heart and mind back to a place of what really matters. This was a shorter phrase but when you start meditation on the word it makes you look deeper into the truth. I would think about the goodness of God. How this is one of His attributes. It is not just something he does it is WHO He is. We know that our God is never changing so with this fact in mind I can trust that because He is good He will be good to me. God is not out to get me. He loves me. So much that He sent His only Son to die in my place. To pay for all my sins so that I can live in a relationship with Him. He is good to me. He has good plans for me. He wants to give good things to His children. Last but not least He is good at being God. It is so easy for me to start believing the lie that I know better than God. That my plan is best. That my idea is the best way to go. This is not true. I am not God nor do I want to be so I have to keep myself in my rightful place and God in His. He is good at being God not me. He sees the past, present, and future. He is a work. I must surrender all. I must trust and believe that He is good at being God.

"Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!

Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!"

Psalm 34:8

One of my favorite companies, The Daily Grace CO., often says “preach the gospel to yourself”. This is so important. I need to keep the truth in front of me. It is so easy to get distracted by the world and forget what truly matters.

When God’s word is your guide you will never be led astray.

NEVER

Lean into Him friend. When you feel lost, alone, or unsure of what’s next remind yourself of who is in control.
